Dr Jessica Wu The Best Supplements for Your Skin and Health

Many of my patients ask me what supplements they should take to stay healthy and look their best. My initial response is that it’s more important to eat a well-balanced diet containing protein and antioxidants (along with specific foods based on my FEED YOUR FACE principles). That said, here are some supplements that I believe in:

  • Vitamin C is an essential cofactor for producing strong collagen. Over time (especially near menopause), your body makes less collagen, leading to thinner skin and more wrinkles and sagging. Taking vitamin C (or eating foods that are high in vitamin C), can help your body produce stronger collagen and maintain firmness. Vitamin C is also a potent antioxidant and fights environmental damage from pollution, cigarette smoke, and UV rays.

  • Turmeric is a spice popular in Indian cooking. It comes from the root of a plant in the ginger family, and gives curries and American mustard its yellow color. It contains a compound called curcumin, which has been shown to have antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. Whole turmeric extract has been shown to relieve skin rashes and help wounds heal faster.

  • Turmeric has also been shown to reduce pain from osteoarthritis and may help protect against Alzheimer’s disease. While turmeric has been shown to be generally safe, it may interfere with one type of chemotherapy, and it should be avoided if you have gallstones.

  • Biotin, a form of vitamin B, helps strengthen hair and nails. One study found that taking 2.5 mg/day of biotin for 2 months helped heal dry, splitting nails in 2/3 of the volunteers who took it. Biotin supplements are widely available and show no evidence of toxicity.

  • Biotin is naturally found in salmon, egg yolks, cabbage, peanuts, almonds, walnuts, broccoli, and whole grains. Many of my patients have seen results with Visceral supplements, which contain biotin, zinc, and iron.

  • Vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium are essential for strong bones. (Stay tuned for an upcoming article on bones and wrinkles.) There is also some new research showing the benefits of certain types of Collagen supplements.

As always, check with your doctor before starting new supplements, especially if you have a medical condition or are taking medications.
